museums at the Arlberg

Lake Constance gives the city of Bregenz that special something. Not only the festival, which takes place in summer, but also the beautiful sunsets on the lakeshore and the numerous activities on Lake Constance give the city almost a Mediterranean flair. A boat trip on Lake Constance is definitely recommended, for example, combined with a visit to Mainau Island. Enjoy a day trip to the “flower island” and let yourself be enchanted by the colorful play of colors of the more than 12,000 rose plants.

About an hour’s drive from Lech is the provincial capital of Vorarlberg – Bregenz – which is definitely worth a visit with a variety of sights and due to its location on Lake Constance.

The green landscape of the Brengenzerwald stretches from the Arlberg to Lake Constance and has a lot to offer for nature lovers as well as for culture lovers and gourmets! Above all, the region of 30,000 inhabitants is known for its wooden architecture and cheese culture – and not for nothing!

The destination for all cheese lovers

The Kunsthaus Bregenz is one of the world’s most important museum buildings in contemporary architecture – and not for nothing. Made of glass panels, steel and a stone mass of poured concrete, the building looks like a luminous body from the outside and represents an extraordinary exhibition venue for artistic works.

The Kunsthaus Bregenz – a unique building!

The Tannberg is a place with a great history. Since the immigration of Wallisians from the Swiss canton of Wallis, the Tannberg has connected the three settlements of Lech, Warth and Schröcken. The settlement “Bürstegg” is the highest Walser settlement (1.719 m). Here you will follow in the footsteps of the Walsers and their centuries-old history.

Numerous visitors flock to the Bernhardstal Gorge in Elbigenalp every year to experience the spectacular atmosphere of the Geierwally open-air stage. The stage, named after the play of the same name, is built directly into the striking rock of the Berhardstal Gorge and represents the cultural highlight of the region. Since 1993, cultural events of all kinds have taken place on the wildly romantic open-air stage under a starry sky. If the weather does not play along, the performances can still take place thanks to a flexible roofing. Top-class plays, such as “The Swabian Children” or “The Avalanche” are given a very special touch on the authentic stage!

Cross the wild and romantic Höhenbachtal Gorge on the longest, free accessible pedestrian suspension bridge in Austria! The approximately 200 meter long, one meter wide and approx. 105 meter high rope suspension bridge is guaranteed to give you a dreamlike panorama and heart palpitations at the same time! The 120 km long Lechweg also runs over this bridge.

Panoramic view and heart palpitations on the Holzgau suspension bridge!

The union of alps, farmers, dairymen, cheese makers, inns, museums and other businesses forms the Bregenzerwald Cheese Route. There is always variety for the whole family, because the many different businesses offer everything a cheese heart desires, from a hike to cheese tasting to a concert. Visit the cheese cellar in Lingenau and see around 32,000 loaves of mountain cheese ripening or learn about cheese production from the past to the present in the Alpine dairy museum in Hittisau.

The Bregenzerwald Cheese Route – cheese for body and soul!

In the Lech Museum, as a house for culture, history and language, you can dive into the interesting past of the Arlberg. Visit the “Huber-Hus”, which dates back to the 16th century, and learn something about the history of the inhabitants of Lech in the restored rooms. Examine numerous exhibits from the areas of handicrafts, animal husbandry, living culture and textile production at the Lech-Tannberg exhibition collection and gain deep insights into the development of mountain farming and skiing.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions and events are organized from time to time, which also present the material and immaterial cultural assets from the region.

The Lech Museum – a place of encounter and cultural exchange.

The nature park region Lechtal stretches from the feet of the Lechtal and Allgäu Alps to the borders of Vorarlberg and is characterized by the unique appearance of the last wild river in Europe. The natural idyll offers fantastic opportunities for active and relaxing days in the fresh air. For example, the famous Lech Trail, which leads from the source of the Lech near Lake Formarin in Lech to the Lech Falls in Füssen in the Allgäu, is a real nature experience.

A trip to the Lech Valley is definitely worth the trip!

The villa, which has been owned by the municipality and tourism association of St. Anton am Arlberg since 1971, takes you on a journey into the past. With the accompanying park, the museum offers a picturesque setting to convey the history of St. Anton. While guests can indulge in culinary delights on the ground floor, the permanent exhibition and changing special exhibitions on the second floor offer interesting insights into important topics in the history of St. Anton am Arlberg. Amidst a unique alpine park landscape, you can learn about the Arlberg Railway and its impact on agriculture and tourism, as well as the development of skiing on the Arlberg, and then enjoy culinary delights in the in-house restaurant.

Here you feel space and time

In the unique architecture of the Skyspace-Lech, which is mostly underground, new dimensions open up: upwards towards the sky and inside completely to oneself.

The work of art designed by James Turrell grants new dimensions through its special architecture. The open dome narrows the space and the field of vision of the sky in such a way that a completely new sense of space, time and thus consciousness is created.

The architectural masterpiece is a contemporary museum and deals with the history and present of the westernmost province of Vorarlberg. The main attraction of the Vorarlberg Museum is the more than 150,000 artifacts from art, history, folklore and archaeology. The most striking feature of the museum is certainly the large panorama window. From there, you can enjoy a dreamlike view over Lake Constance all the way to the Lindau shore.

The Waldschwimmbad, which is located between Lech and Zug, is one of the top 3 family adventures in Lech Zürs. Since the summer of 2020, the newly opened swimming pool offers a 25-meter-long sports pool, an aquafit pool with bubble loungers and massage jets, a children’s pool, a baby pool and a wide wave slide. In addition to table tennis and a beach volleyball court, the Waldschwimmbad offers a spacious playground.

Fun for the whole family in the middle of nature is guaranteed.
